Someone in my corvette club said that when he runs at the strip, he removes the filter on his Vararam. At first I thought he was crazy , but then I started thinking that maybe for just several ¼ runs it would be OK. He claims it adds 2 mph to his trap speed, although he didn’t say anything about his ET. What do you guys and gals think? Safe for a few runs, or looking for trouble?

Looking for trouble. There are other ways to safely add 2mph to yourtrap speed, it may be more expensive to do it, but not as expensive as risking what a small rock into your engine could do. For some people 2mph more may be important, so you never know the things people do to get it.

I would just run the original foam filter at the strip instead of the new ones vararam is using. I don't think taking the filter out would give you much more flow than the foam filter. And it will provide protection against any catastrophic ingestion.
You have to ask yourself, whether 2mph is really worth it at the track when you pretty much race for fun. It wont be much fun when you suck something into your intake

Not to mention all the crap in the unfiltered air (dust, etc.)...
IF I recall correctly, VaraRam had 3 different foam filters with one made specifically for the track...
Hmm?! never heard of a third filter. I know they have the original filter they came with, and then the green one later on. Can you provide more info on the mentioned 3rd filter?

i've seen guys remove the filter at the track. said it picks up 1-2mph. asked about ingestion concerns, was told rocks, pebbles, paper, etc isnt getting passed the maf screen.
i wouldnt do it...want nothing to do with calling a flatbed to haul me home from the track..
foam filter isnt much of a filter, but i check it after every event, no debris to speak of..throttle plate is always clean.
just FYI
EDIT: plus if your run the screens (z06 screens) up front not much other than some dust should get passed them.

I think at WOT I would pass on removing the filter. You could suck in a lot of sand particals in just a few runs. Ultimately you are doing what the filter was designed to stop.

I haven't seen a Z06 MAF Screens, but if the ones I've seen on f-bodies is an indication, I would say it's still too big for protection. A small rock can do some damage, an even smaller debris will do just as much damage as it's the type of things that can get wedged between the piston and the cylinder wall.
