Default fuel sending unit

2001 c-5 33,000 miles. After the fuel guage gets down to about 3/8 the needle drops to empty, the reserve fuel warning comes on, I am told the fuel sensor is bad. cost around $750 to repair. It caused my check engine light to activate. Dealership reset the parameter so that the check engine light is not on (I am told it can come back on at any time) (I was told the fuel sensor sender is operating at 98%) My questions are: 1) besides spending 750 to repair, what have others that have experience this problem done to alleviate it.
2) have there been any recalls on this problem.
3) is my problem an issolated incident?

Most likely the sensor but could be from corrosion on wires/sender board. A quick, cheap, no harm try would be to use Chevron Techron gas treatment (2 treatments). Follow directions on bottle. You can find it at Advance, Pepboys, Autozone, etc.

Cheers

$750 is rediculous. You can do this yourself in an hour and may only need to clean the sending unit. Do a search and you can find part numbers, etc.

A steady diet of Chevron with an occasional Techron injection would have prevented it

I had the same kind of problem on my 2001 Z06,I understand Hi-Sulpher fiel content is the troll
I used a couple cans of B-12 CHEMTOOL® CARBURETOR CLEANER ------(WalMart)

I got the sender cleaned up and from then on it has been Chevron,& All has been well
A common problem in the 01's
.

I switched to Shell, Chevron, Texaco exclusively in my 90k '99 and have not had even a hint of a problen for the last 40k. Maybe just lucky.

Anyone got any instructions on removal of the tanks and sending units? I think I am going to do mine myself and get this problem over with... LOL...
