Ok, I admit Im a dummy. But have been wondering what does the LS1 for our engine mean? Does the LS have words that go with it?
Little Shevy
Just kidding of course. The LS is the series designator that GM used for the engine family. LS1 / LS6 etc. I don't know if there is any rhyme or reason to the letters.
I honestly thought the LS stood for Long Stroke because it was designed with a crank case to accomodate a Long Stroke crank shaft. However, I guess it could be just the generation III engine designation.
GM has been using these codes for it's engine packages for years.
LT-1 back in the 70's along with L82 in the 80's...and many others.
Then many years later we got the LT1, LT4, LS1, LS6, LS2 LS7 and so forth. It basicly represents the generation and performance of the given engine group.
L is the GM code for engine options, I believe it start with the 63 Stingrays, my 64 was a L84. The S and T versions first started with the 69 Camaro's In the top of the line small and big block engines. GM likes to recycle the engine lettering for upgraded products. The LT1 from 69-72 was used again in 92 and the LS engines from 69-74 were repopped for the 98-current designs.
