Last night i desided to do an test. Items used 1 carbon monozide detector plug in type, 5'' long 12 VDC to 120 vac adaptor from radio shack and a portable car battery jumper. I pluged the detector into the adaptor and the adaptor into the jumper and placed them on the passenger floor.rolled up the vette windows, started up the car and drove 15 miles. I thought to myself cool than it happened the detector started screaming.
Ok now my thinking about puting the cats back because we all notice how dirty our cars butt get after driving which to me mean the air is forced upword from under the car past the exhaust tips and some cardon monozide could enter the car. (it may not matter cats or no cat if thats the case)
So today i'm going under the car to retighten all to exhaust connections.
these detectors are made to go off at the first hint of carbon monoxide ... long before the levels reach a harmful state.
Although your test is interesting; I'm not so certain it equates to there being any dangerous buildup in the cockpit.
But used as an exhaust-leak-detector... I think you have a neat idea there.
i've been cutting down trees in my yard all morning but tonight if i'm not to tired i'll be under the car checking for black spots (leaks) on the exhaust. i'll check them for tightnest also
Did you find the exhaust leak? Just beacuse you put the cats back on does not mean you'll have no CO2 in the cabin. You need to find the leak.
spring cleaning the yard all day, trust me after cutting down 2 trees and cutting them up for loading. cleaning and burning branches, mopping and waxing all the floors and stairs in the house i may not get under the car tonight.
i still think some people may want to try this because i'd hate to hear someone fell a sleep at the wheel because of an exhaust leak. that normally you wouldn't smell.
it me 15 miles on the highway for it to sound off this summer i'm planning an 600 mile trip. By the way does anyone have headaches and don't know why? carbon monoxide not only puts you to sleep it also cause headaches.
I checked out the clamps on my Dynatech system and it looked as though there might be a couple of leaks at the joints. Those band clamps do a great job of holding everything in place, but they look like there might be a path for exhaust to leak. I went to NAPA and picked up a tube of "acousti/seal". Its a black gel that is put on the joint and then slip the pipe in the last 1/4", and tighten the clamp. Let dry overnight. I think it has helped.
