Default SMH PCV Mod Update

Just wanted to let everyone know that the SMH PCV Mod site has been updated. Here's a summary of what's changed or been added:

1) Instructions are now available for '97-'98 LS1's, and pre-assembled kits for these years are available.

2) Several weeks ago I checked the TB and connections, and they were completely oil-free. Last weekend I noticed some pinging, and upon checking, found alot of oil at the TB connection. Something caused the filters to start passing oil suddenly. It's possible one or both developed a tear in the filter media. I replaced the filters, dumped some Techron in the tank to clean things up, and the pinging went away again. I'm now recommending that the filters be changed at every oil change, in order to make sure they're swapped out before failing and getting oil back into the throttle body. The catch can should be emptied at each oil change also.

3) I also noticed that there was some oil dribbling down the side of the catch can, due to the loose fit between the 3/8" tubing and 5/16" connection. To fix it, I wrapped some Teflon tape around the connection. All pre-assembled kits now come this way, I'd recommend that everyone do the same to prevent a leak at the connection. Electrical tape would also work well.

4) After a recent discussion here, I've ordered a Jaz catch can and will be playing around with that when it arrives. I'll be trying to incorporate it into the mod to see if the flow can be opened back up some without reducing oil separation.

5) In the meantime, I've received an oil analysis kit from Amsoil. I'll be sending a sample off for analysis in the next few weeks to see what effect the reduced PCV flow has on the oil quality. I'll post the results on the site when they're available.

I've also posted a comparison between the different brands of octane boosters under the Tech section.

Thanks Steve!

I am considering playing with a GReddy catch can ($104), or making my own using kitchen scouring pads as fliter media...

Thanks for the update! How many miles on those fuel filters before they went bad? You keep the same catch can?

After 4500 miles they were fine, no oil at the TB. After 5000, there was a lot of oil at the TB. When they go, they go fast.
