Twice in 8 months/9300 miles I have experienced significant grinding when attempting to shift into 5th gear (once at 120 mph). In each case, I seem to have reacted quickly enough to prevent damage...but now I'm a bit nervous. What is the theory of operation of the reverse lockout mechanism...and is it possible to have a condition as intermittent as this one properly diagnosed? Any ideas/suggestions?
I'm a bit confused. Are you trying to say that you went to go to 5th gear, but went into reverse instead? Or just that you are getting grinding when you go into 5th gear at high speed?
Hi there,
Please remember that your reverse lockout solenoid is set to engage above 3 miles per hour, and if you are NOT going into reverse, you are fine, and this is not a consideration.
You may have an issue with the blocking ring not spinning down correctly, or binding within the syncro.
I would recommend that you drive it with a mechanic to assist in the isolation of the issue.

The problem has occurred once at high speed, once at low speed. In each case, I'm certain I did not miss a shift...these were relatively slow and deliberate gear changes. However, it isn't clear to me whether the reverse lockout failed in some fashion and the grinding resulted from trying to go into reverse, or whether it was trying to go into 5th. In each case, I did not go into either gear...I simply went to neutral, then back to 4th. Subsequent shifts to 5th were without issue.
Interesting. I've experienced two similar incidents where I was performing some quick maneuvers and shifts high in the RPM band and had a bit of grinding going into 5th. I thought about a possible Reverse Lockout problem, but the second time this happened I noticed I was having some difficulty finding the gear. I think what I was experiencing was the synchro issue for whatever reason.
