I'm about to get an MTI stage II head/cam package with LS6 intake, Underdrive pulley, hardend push rods, and
PCM programming. Other then this stuff and whats in my signature, what else should i get that will help gain more
HP while maintaining or extending the life of the motor?
I was think about adding the Crane 1.8 roller rockers but i'm not sure if any real HP is gained. Also was thinking about
having the timing chain replaced (car has 30K miles).
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (97C5ENVY)
Given that your car is a '97, I assume you have put a few miles on it. I would at the least put on a new GM timing chain and sprokets as well as change the lifters.
The Roller rockers might give you a few more ponies. I am not sure that they are worth the money unless money is really not an object. You will create less friction which might help lower oil temps also. This is always a good thing.
Looks like you are going to have a great setup. Best of luck to you.
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (2FST4U)
2FST4U,
I was thinking about replacing the timing chain already, but not sure why sprockets and lifters? Are the sprockets that
easily worn? And about the lifters, replacing them is that just for longivity of the motor or is there performance to be
gained here too? Also the crane 1.8 roller rockers was just a thought, i'm not one to just throw $$$ into the wind, but if there is
some definite HP to be gained(5+HP) without sacrificing nothing, then i would have to give it some serious thought.
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (97C5ENVY)
Hey Ernest!
Its my understanding that after a few thousand miles (5K-10K) the lifters and cam wear together and the introduction of a new cam with the existing lifters could create some unwanted noise.
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (97C5ENVY)
I have no dyno results personally to back up the lifters, but I think I have read on here that the rockers will give 5-10 HP dyno proven. The benefit of possible lower oil temps is also a benefit.
The timing chain and gears should always be replaced together. It is too cheap not to. Maybe on an LT1 where it costs $250 for the timing set, you should think twice, but for $70...
Lifters wear out. For the longevity and integrity of the motor, lifters are a very good idea. Cam and lifters wearing together is referring to the old flat tappet cams. Roller cams tend not to create and discernable patterns and can be reused if not worn out.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I am happy to answer.
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (Scott97)
Hey Scott!
Ahhh.....i didn't think of it like that.
Yeah i got in on the deal that RAT put togethter........if you want to call it a "deal". Don't get me wrong, i'm not belittling
RAT's efforts in any way, I just think MTI could have given a little better discount. But hey i was planning on doing the H/C
anyway this winter, so at least now i get to save a couple hunderd dollars....woohoo!
2FST4U,
I didn't realize that it was less the $100 for the timeing set. Yeah, at that price it would be good insurance to have it
changed out. If the roller rockers can add up to 10 more ponnies then i may have to get a set. :D

A couple hundred bucks will get you a few extras.
I'm gearing up for a H/C package myself.
I guess we can compare notes afterwards and then lets hit the track! :D
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (97C5ENVY)
I don't think 1.8 rockers are a good match with the high lift cams MTI uses. The T1 and B1 are 0.563", right? So that'd be 0.569 with the 1.8 rockers, because stock is 1.7.
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (Miles in Michigan)
Stick to the stock rockers, 1.8's will give too much valve lift. As for what else to buy, long tube headers should be high on your list, followed by a MAF-T for better tuning.

Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (97C5ENVY)
You probably do not/cannot use 1.8 rockers with the cam profiles that MTI uses. I have 1.8 in my mild cam DRM setup and I will be removing them when the C5R 427 goes in with a different cam next month.
Re: Head/Cam + what else should i get???? (Miles in Michigan)
Miles - I was wondering if there would be a clearence problem using the MTI T1 cam and the 1.8 rockers........guess i better scratch that one off my list of things to get.
Z06Bliss - I was thinking about "MAYBE" adding a 100 shot of NOS.......but thats a big MAYBE.
Scott, i thought IM was for AOL/Yahoo type email accounts? Am i missing something? I know....... i'm software engineer and i've been in the IT buiseness 10 years........but i don't get out much. :blueangel: :D
