Default steering posistion sensor

I am a new member here so I hope this is not a repeat. I got a service vehicle soon warning light indicator the other day and took my 1997 vette 6 speed (27000miles) to my local dealer. The tech said the code he pulled up was for a failed steering position sensor and they want 460.00 to fix it. Outside of the warrning indicator their appears to be nothing wrong. the steering still gets more sensitive at higher speeds as it always did. Has anyone else had this problem and are they charging a fair amount for the work. I'm just not convinced thats the problem. Everyone wants to charge me an hour labor charge to do a diagnostic and I just paid to have one done today at my local dealer. I hate to pay 460.00 for something I may not need as I am retired and on a fixed income.

I had that sensor replaced a month ago on my '02. It was causing the Active Handling to kick in and brake the wheels. Seemed fine if active handling is turned off. But kind of dangerous with it on. Pricewise that is about what I paid if I remember right. But then again I had it done at the stealership.

I've been down a similar road before, codes thrown are like C1281 and C1286 if memory serves. Any changes or work on the front end recently? Have them perform an alignment prior to replacing the position sensor.

No nothing done to the front end. Every thing seems to be working fine. No symptoms of anything wrong wsith any system. After posting my thread, I have dome some driving and when I first left the dealership the service soon warning light came back on as the serv. adv said it would, I reset it and it has not back on yet. Put about 75 miles today and no light, so now I wonder if I should take it back when the part comes in and have the service done.

yup, i get the C1281 code every now and then, as well as the P1571... I've also had no problems with my car for the last 2 months (even with those codes...) but i'm planning on getting them looked ASAP
