Default Lug nut torque?

I am mounting some new tires and had them all off with the car on jacks. I had to paint some curb rash on the right side. Anyway what is the proper lug nut torque? All I know is I used my Milwaukee 18 volt impact to take them off and they were much tighter than I would have imagined. They have never been off before. Thanks for any help.

The first thing to realize is that you should never use an impact wrench on your lug nuts.

The following is the torque sequence I use for installing my wheels:

1) Finger tighten all 5 nuts

2) Following a star pattern tighten all 5 nuts to 25 lb-ft.

3) Repeat using the star pattern to 50 lb-ft.

4) Repeat using the star pattern to 75 lb-ft.

5) Finish using the star pattern to 100 lb-ft.

6) Drive for a short period and retighten to 100 lb-ft.

Yes, tighten in a star pattern. Yes, recheck after a short while. Actually, checking the wheel nuts ought to be part of your normal checks along with tyre pressure and condition (I know, few do).

But, IMHO doing the tightening that precisely and over that number of increments is way past overboard. Still, that's certainly better than not doing it at all!

p.s. This stuff is also to be found in that secret thing called the owner's manual.

Uneven torque on your lug nuts can cause rotors to warp. Warped rotors cause brake pedal pusations. Never use an impact wrench to tighten them. Always use a torque wrench.

You can use an impact wrench to loosen them.
