Default Squeeky !!!!

Has anyone else experienced Squeeks from there new Bilsteins Sports after installation in the rear.

I dont hear any in the front, and from Undrneath the car sitting on a rack and pulling down on the back of the vehicle you can hear the squeeks, and they are coming from the shocks, not the spring adjustment bushings (which I thought at first because the vehicle was also just lowered), sounds like a damn bird chirping in the vehicle,I even removed both shocks and remounted them, also the spring bolts which are new 7'' bolts, removed the 8" due to the fact that I couldnt raise the vehicle anymore with the 8" becuase the nut bottomed out.

It didnt squeek prior to the work done.

thnx

Default Chirpping

Piazzano,
Are you sure noise is not coming from your rear swaybar bushings ??? I've got bilstiens and they never squeaked but the bushings on the swaybars did. I replaced the swaybars and bushings ( Base to ZO6) on my 99 problem solved.

Very common problem, easy fix. Its your Sway bar bushings. I went through the same thing. Swore it was the shocks. Use silicone grease

Its not the swaybars, I just replaced them with the ZO6 bars and endlinks 1.5 weeks prior to replacing the shocks and lowering it, and after I replaced the sways I havent had any noise from them what so ever, You can distinctly hear the bird chirp from the Shocks when you are under the vehicle and pulling down on the vehicle, and while in the car driving the chirp seems to be coming from the upper wheel well.

And as far as lubricating the New ZO6 swaybars, It is not recomended Per GM, and Fichtners representatives, the new bushings have a nylon mesh on the inside of the bushing that mates against the swaybar, I presume thats why they dont recomend lubricating them.

I was told by a GM performance shop that the Bisteins with the extra rubber stopper and washer that is on the shaft under the Boot area may need to break In for a period, dont know if this is true, thats why I am Inquiring about this.

thnx

I just put on polyurethane bushings on my new zo6 swaybars (and they came with synthetic grease in tubes) and have no squeeks with my new Bilstein sports! Got them from Ecklers only abou 15.00.
May be worth a try anyway?

Polyurethane bushing are Lubricated, GM rubber bushings are not, and as stated before Its not the bushings making the noise, but thanx anyways.

I had the exact "chirping bird" noise !!!!!

Turned out there was crud in the upper shock mount bushing.

We actually took the sway bar off and drove the car....sound was still there. Then we took the shock off.....sound was gone......You may need to try this.

But check the shock mount bushing...it could be twisted and dirty. I couldn't believe that this was causing all the noise.

Thanx Howie, I also have removed the shocks once, is it possible that the top nut is tightned too much, it calls for a 19ft/lb torque, but you need to hold the shaft with a hex socket and tighten the nut with a wrench, so Torqing is kinda of impossible, unless there is a crow foot type attachement that can be put on a torque wrench.I posted about this while I was installing them and some forum members just said to tighten them snug.

I tightned the nut untill the bushings were just starting to compress, maybe a 1/8" from the washer circumfrence.

Thanx

Here are pics of the upper shock bushings while the tires are on the ground (under load), do the bushings look like there sitting correctly, its looks like the rubber bushings are off center corresponding to the washers, is this normal or are the nuts not torqued correctly.

any input would be appreciated, or if anyone can take a quick peek at there setup, thanx

My old daddy always told me to tighten the nuts on the shocks until the bushings bulged out to the same diameter as the washers. Maybe you don't have them tight enough?

Well I remove the rear shocks, cleaned up all mating surfaces again, lubed up the rubber bushings and tightned accordingly, went for a cruise tonight , all was quiet for about 15 miles, got on it a bit of the line a couple times (hell its a vette right), noticed the damn squeeking again , son of a b..ch, I thought I had the problem resolved, oh well , only thing I can try now is to see if any vendor sells polyurethane bushings just for the bilstein shocks.

thanx for all the input , much appreciated as always

I have the same bilsteins on my vette and had squeaks.

Read some hwere in other post about making sure that the rubber mounting bushing is sqeezed to at least the diameter of the metal washers.

I went back and tighten mine down until the rubber bushing protruded out around the edges. This cured my squeak problem. Hope this helps.

Thats exactly what I did yesterday, remounted and tightned them as I stated in my last post, but the squeeking came back, I did notice though when I removed the bushings that they were alleady distorted a bit off center, so I guess Im going to have to find just the bushings and replace them and start all over again.

thanx

You can order just the mounting washer/bushings if you call Bilstein.....I got a set and one day will go in and replace all of mine. They were REALLY CHEAP
