I have 34,000 miles on my 97 MN6 Coupe. I thought it might be time to change the gear oil. I put in GM's synthetic gear oil! No need for the additive.
$26.95 a quart. It takes 1.6 quarts or just over 1 liter.
The old oil was pretty bad, very dark and smelled like crude oil!
After we drained it we ran a quart of gear oil thru it spun the tires around in both directions (by hand) let it sit. And drained it again. After seeing how bad that oil was I’m glade we ran a quart thru, that oil was pretty dirty also. Then added the new synthetic oil!
Labor $20.00
Extra Gear Oil 6.95
GM Gear oil $53.90
Total around $80.00 with tax.
I wish I would have done it sooner!

Can some one verify that the Gear lube I bought has the additive already in it?
The part number of the GM gear lube is 012346140.
I asked the parts manager if I needed the additive and he "said I didn't need it, the additive was already in it"!
For the price I paid for the gear lube, I would hope that it was allready in it?
I didn't have the dealer do the change I had a friend do it. I just bought the gear lube from the dealer.

Another redline use here:yesnod:(I know redline has all required additives). Did this with the help of my freindly neighborhood mechanic and did both trany and diff changes at same time. Cost was about $7 per quart (+shipping) for the redline fluids + $20 to my mechanic. Also make sure you get a piece of clear tubing, at least 1/2" x 6' and a funnel that fits into the tubing, if you have these it will make filling both the trany and diff very easy.
I always use Mobil 1 synthetic lube @ $6.95. I think you had better use some limited slip fluid too; check it out and don't drive too far until you get the answer about that GM stuff. For what you paid, it should have it in but I would doubt that it does.

The part numbers I have are:
GM Synthetic gear oil part number 12378261
GM posi additive part number 1052358
Notice the gear oil number is different. It might be worth calling and asking the difference between part numbers. Nothing on the bottle indicated it already had the posi additive?
Here's the latest on the Diff fluid:
I talked to the service advisor about the Diff fluid, and he talked to there Vette mechanic. The mechanic said that the new synthic diff fluid, doesn't have the additive and they are seeing problems with that fluid.
(What the heck did I pay $26.95 for?)
So out it goes.
Next week when my new Cartec Clutch comes in, I'll have them drain the diff oil and put in redline and the additive.
I'm going to have them save the fluid so I can get my money back. What a bunch of crap!
The parts manager says one thing and the mechanics say another. Is money that important that you have to sell your customers crap just so you can make you quota!
I guess I won't be buying any more GM parts from that Guy!
