reverse Lock Out...Yes or No ?

There is a reverse lockout solenoid. However, it is designed to be over riden by pushing on the shifter hard enough (which isn't too hard in some cases). The solenoid works in conjunction with a spring that provides the lockout force. Once you overcome the spring pressure you will go into reverse. GM designed this as a fail safe in case the thing failed in the lockout position. You could still get the car into reverse to move it.

I had the same problem. In my case, the reverse lockout selenoid was "lazy" or at least intermittent. It certainly didn't happen all the time, but sometimes when I was intending to shift to 5th, it would allow travel over into reverse. Additionally, of the few times it did occur, it was always my first attempt to shift into 5th since starting the car. The reverse lockout selenoid was replaced, PROBLEM SOLVED.
