Default Help Needed - Thump-a-Thump-a-Thump

Spent the day at Hallett, a road course. When I apply the brakes leaving the track I hear AND feel the cyclical "thump" referenced in the title..It only occurs when the brakes are applied which leads to rule out a tire issue.

I had NO off track excursions. NO "rotational" thump unless I apply brakes. Sounds like it's from the front.

The thump seems to occur with each rotation of a tire like clockwork.

The rotors have quite a few track miles. Are showing many small surface cracks typical of track use.

The rotors DID NOT overheat as I've got DRM ducts and was gentle on them.

I've not pulled my race pads yet to see if there are any issues with them.

What do you think

Rick

Sounds like the rotors are "warped". I put them in quotation because some of the expert brake guys have a different explanation for this. I should go look that up.

Thanks,

I'll check it out tomorrow when I swap back to street tires. Probably a cracked rotor.

It's a learning experience. Before I went to the track I looked closely at the rotors and saw small surface cracks. I looked because of the warnings stated on the Forum. Just wasn't sure at what point they needed to be replaced. As in how far can I go.

My problem is I'm learning on my own. I don't have someone to offer advice. I thought the rotors were getting close but not sure how far I could go.....If this is the problem as I assume it is I now know how far I can go. I had a brand new set of spare front rotors with me at the track but didn't feel the thump until on the road out of the track. I felt nothing during the last session.

For what it's worth, I was turning some of the best times on the track in my C5 coupe. Running mid 1:34 second laps with lots of traffic. Only guy that passed me was John Paige who owns 21st Century Musclecars in his 06 - Z06 which is tricked out a bit. He has big race rubber and a cam and was scary fast once he learned the track.

I'm stock in an 01 coupe except for race rubber/pads, cooling ducts and Z06 suspension.

This was my fifth day at Hallett. About 500 track miles now to date.

It was a good day

Great Forum and people. Wish you were closer....

Rick
