I noticed a couple of drops of fluid under the rear end tonight . (my son's 99 coupe with A4 , 3.15 rear end )
From what I've read is that the common problem is a rear end leak at the axles / differ .
The differ. at the axles is dry on both sides , but the entire trans pan cover and rear end are wet at the bottom .Cannot see where the fluid is coming from .
the fluid is thin and clear , I've heard that rear end fluid is green (?)
and I know trans fluid is red ( or should be ?) .
I have cleaned the area as good as I can with carb / choke cleaner
and wiped it down . maybe that will help pinpoint the problem .
Any suggestions of what I should be looking for ? or has anyone been down this road before ?
thanks
brake fluid level ok , and no brake pressure issues .
I'm stomped so far .
what should the color of the rear end fluid be , green as I thought , and is it thick or a thin fluid ?
It should be 75W90 oil, kinda thick and would have a heavy gear oil smell to it. If it was rear end fluid it could have come from the breather on top of the rear end.
The trans fluid will be a thin oil and might have the clear look if there is not a lot of it. The oil is very thin so it might give the impression of being clear. The trans has a breather on it and might have come from this.
Has the car been serviced lately?
