Default Question on Wheel pressure sensors

98 coupe, stock wheels
Just bought a set of used wheels with tire installed and 01 sensors. I hear they will not work with a 98. Seems like my options are to either replace the sensors with the ones I have on the old wagon wheels or, to forget about them and go back to using a tire pressure gauge. My question is best guess about how long a 98 sensor will last (it would be sad to replace them and then have them die a month later) and, is there a way to make 01 sensors compatable with the 98. I hate to have to go through the mount/dismount thing just for the sensors. Thanks

I know the 01 wont work on the 98 and I dont know of any cheap way to get them to work. As far as how long they last I have had 2 of them die on my 99. So they may last a while or they may last a month my guess. If you decide to get rid of them let me know I had my last one die last week.

Buy new ones at Fred Beans. Best advice I got after an endless number of threads looking for good used ones. They're around $335.00 delivered .

98 sensors at $75 each. Batteries last ~8 years (some will add 100k miles).

You can't 'tune out' the sensors on pre-01 vettes, so if you 'blow them off', you will have to reset the DIC at each start.

I just replaced the sensors on my 98 (45k miles) when I changed out the tires.

As for compatability, the 97 - 00 are Gen I sensors, they provide an output to the computer >15 mph constantly, the 01 and up have Gen II sensors, they provide an output signal >15 mph and at 1 hour intervals, unless a setpoint has been exceeded. And you can tune them out.

Do you have any idea how old yours are? Are they original equip or has some PO replaced them?
You could install your 98's in the new wheels and tires and see what happens... (this is what I would do)
You can buy new ones.
You could send your 98's off to have them rebuilt...

You can reset the error every time it comes up.

Good info and thoughts. Some of this will depend on if I can find a wheel guy that I trust to dismount/mount these new wheels and tires. I suppose I could take out the 01's and sell them to defray costs.

Question, some say to get new or rebuild them. I am pretty OK with a soldering iron. Any how-to's on how to do a battery replacement on my own?

The tire changer won't have to completely remove the tires to swap out the sensors. He just needs to break the bead on the top side to do the switch. That way there's no rebalance and it shouldn't cost as much.
