Default Which torque converter?

O.K. 3:42's on the way. I need some advice a a torque converter. I noticed the Pro-Torques stall speeds are much lower then the stall speeds of the Yanks(3000-3500) How do they compare?. I was originally leaning toward the Yank 3500 but the more I read the more confused I get. My car is mainly street driven with a few 1/4 mile passes once in a while. Only other performance beyond these and whats listed in my sig will be a PLII once I choose a converter. Thanks everyone.

The choice is yours, this question has been asked many times. Just read and make your own selection, some vendors may try to presuade you to what they sell!

Best thing to do is see if any one in your area has a torque converter car you could drive. Then , and only then, will you truly know the difference in the 2400 or 3500 stall speed. I have the 2400 and cut some awesome 1/4 mile times, but I have ofter wondered what the difference would be in street driving.........like you're cruisin at 35 MPH and punch it. At 20-30 MPH mine will take off like a scalded cat. Then in the 55-63 MPH range, it will take off pretty quickly................but at over 70.............there isn't that explosion of acceleration.and I always wondered if that isn't due to the lower stall speed??????????? Maybe I need to drive a 3500 car..............any volenteers???

As stated before....the choice is yours, but don't be misled by the advertising. Try to get with guys that have the unit you "think" you would like. My friend has the Yank 3000 and I have the ProTorque 2900, both cars stall the same but my 60' is better. His best is 1.74 and mine is 1.69, both cars using drag radials. I personnally lean toward the ProTorque being as I have 55,000 miles on it and my friend has approx. 8,000. I have not to date had any problems and he has had issues with lock up at times. I especially, use my car as a daily driver (over 62,000 miles on the car), and also have about 400 drag strip passes on it. The fuel mileage on both cars is equal, only influenced by the amount of problems with the "right foot" causing lower readings :D .

agreed, it's a personal choice. If you race 6 times or more/year then go for the 3500SY else stick with 3000Y or another brand, similar stall.

Thanks everyone. Looks like a Pro Torque 2900 or a Yank 3000.

Well this topic has been beat to death but I am happy to add my 2 cents to it.

I feel if you are doing a 3.42 and will primarily drive the car on the street with some tracxk time here and there then you should consider the 3500 Yank. I say this because the Yank has slightly better efficiency than the PT's and the midrange is better than them too. However the PT's will hit harder off the line if you can get traction. Any of the converters you choose though traction will be an issue. The 3500 stall sounds really high but trust me it is very driveable. I use my car as a daily driver and no problems so far. Any of the above converters mentioned are high quality units and you can't go wrong with either brand. I chose the Yank but there is nothing wrong with the PT's. Anything is better than the stock one and I think that's something we can all agree on. :D

BTW anyone close who wants to go for a ride just drop a line

We were contemplating going with 3.42 gears, however, we decided to spend the $$$ elsewhere & stayed with the 3.15's. We talked to the tuner we use about torque converts. He would install any one we selected, but he said that Yank makes a great product (almost no slip) & if it were his car, he would go with Y3000 for 3.15 & SY3500 for the 3.42.

I have a 2001 Pewter coupe too! I've got thr Pro torque 2400 and the 3.42's in the box in the garage. Just waiting for the program to come in.
I asked the same qustions. I don't think there is a bad choice out there. Your pretty safe with the Yank,Pro-Torque ,Vigilante, etc.

They all will give you what you want. Power to the ground.Good Luck :D :D :D :D :D
