what's in the stock bottom end on a 98 vette? Crankshaft, rods, pistons; are these all forged or cast. Getting ready to boos the power wanted to know how strong the bottom end is.
6 bolt main caps
crank - nodular cast iron, variable radii undercuts/rolled fillets
rods - hot forged powdered metal alloy
rod bolts - 9 mm cap screw
pistons - cast eutectic aluminum
From what I have seen (and I am not an expert) the stock bottom end is good up to about 530 crank hp. As stated above, the pistons and rod bolts seem to be the weak links. All and all, the LSx engines are pretty amazing.
Check out the book "Chevy LS1/LS6 Performance" by Christopher P Endes, some good background on the stock bottom end.
