I need help diagnosing and fixing a squeaking rear end on my 98 Coupe. It is a high pitched squeal which I only hear when I am going slow - say 5 mph or less. It is also definitely periodic with the rotation of the rear end - when I go faster the frequency of the squeak increases.
My personal theory is that it has something to do with the parking brake. It tends to happen more when I've used the parking break on a downward-facing slope, and sometimes I can make it go away by coming to a stop and yanking up and down on the parking break handle a few times.
I have seen where the retaining spring that holds the parking brake shoe to the backing plate pop off or break.When this happens,the spring will drag inside the rotor,possibly causing a squeek...
