I have heard rumors of some Vette racers removing the stock Air Filter cover lid and zip tieing a K & N Air filter into the Air Filter housing base. Any words of wisdom?
Depends on what version of the cover you have. Some guys just took a hole saw & cut a symetrical pattern in the top side and reinstalled over the K&N. I think the top part contributes to holding the filter in place all along the four sides where just using tywraps could allow the edges of the filter to let air by where not held in place. But really you know you want an aftermarket system, so get yourself a present and save the original stuff in case you want to go back to stock. Join the mod squad

I just so happen to have a 2002 stock Z06 lid and K&N air filter to go with it. Less than 200 miles on them. I got a deal I could not pass up on a Blackwing and I'm quite happy with it. $75 plus shipping if your interested P.M. me.
I have this temporary modification on my '02 Z06 and it works great. I can totally tell by SOTP that it's gettin' somptin' from the increased air flow. I don't know if the K&N has anything to do with it as the discarded paper filter was filthy. Plus, there's a lot of argument about the K&Ns actually being no better or even slightly worse than paper. I'll be finding out first hand either way. In closing, I recommend this mod for those people saving up for something significant, e.g. SC/TT/Heads/Cam/etc.
What I did different:
* Shortened the stock metal straps to hold the airfilter in place.
* Modified the original outer cover to help hold the air filter assembly in place.
Air filter comes out like factory or you can loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body and pull the complete airbox assembly. The original outer air box cover stays bolted to the car.
