My '98 Corvette(manual transmission) had the column lock recall done in January 2002. But now the service steering column light is on. The dealer now says the light is on because the actuator was grinded off. Does anybody know if there would be a reason for this? Also were they suppose to replace the factory plate with the new smaller plate on the manuals?

Read the stickies at the top of this forum. Tons of info discussed in great detail. Tells all about the most recent recall that replaces the lock plate with one without the slots. Don't let the dealer fool you into replacing your column lock assembly for hundreds of dollars. Just leave it, replace the lock plate per recall, then disconnect your Column Lock Motor assembly and install a K Harness or a CLB.

Exactly right. I have an older Harness K on my Z06 and it works fine. The only disadvantage of the current kits is that GM still seems to be having problems getting reliable relays in the harness.
The only way the dealer would know if the actuator pin was ground off is to open up the column, in which case, I hope they went ahead and removed the lockplate. Once the lockplate is removed, you can use whichever harness you want, GM or aftermarket.
