Default Oil Pressure

Today when the temp got up to 230 the oil pressure dropped from 40psi to around 25-30psi at an idle. As soon as the temp got back to the normal 200 degrees the oil pressure went back to 40-45. Is that normal.

Those numbers sound normal for idle. Are you running a stock or ported oil pump? My numbers are similar.

My 97 is completly stock w/no mods. I hope to change that soon. As soon as I can convince my wife it needs to go faster.

If I remember correctly, the early C5 model oil pumps were prone to experience some problems, which could potentially led to oil starvation. Might want to research the forums. Even if you don't plan to heavily mod your vette - the upgrade to a ported LS6 oil pump would be a good investment. However, it makes more sense to time the install with a cam upgrade.

Tom,
I think those numbers are fairly typical for oil that hot, which is why most of us running our cars on the track use an oil with a higher viscosity.

once Mobil 1 5-30 sees 230 F typical Idle pressure can be as low as 15/20 psi..... which is fine. seeing 45 psi after oil temps sees 230 F is not typical at Idle...
The reason I am posting this is because after seeing thousands of hours of test data, LS/X engines do not see those numbers, ( 45 psi at idle after oil has reached 230F )and I am only trying to say that others seeing 15 to 20 psi at Idle in the summer is normal. 8 psi at Idle with Mobil 1 will lubricate the top end of the engine. Many people think Petro oil pressure and cast iron blocks with higher low end clearances...
What I see here on the forum is many people thinking old school technology... This is not your grandfather's Buick.

True, I was taught 10 psi oil pressure per 1,000 rpms at redline. This is "old school", it worked for LT1s but not LS1s.
