AC compressor engages when heat is turned on
Hello,
I would like to know if my automatic climate control in my 2000 is working properly. The dealer states it is.
When just the heater is turned on (overriding the Auto function and without the front defroster turned on) the AC also turns on. I can here the compressor turn on and the AC indicator lights up. THe heat does work but it doesn't seem correct for the AC to turn on?

What's the temperature position when you turn the heat on? If you have it on cold (or even cool), the "heater" will actually turn the A/C on: the car blends air from the A/C and heater core to give you that "comfy" mix.
Turn the heater control all the way to hot and turn it on - if the A/C comes on then, you have an electrical problem either with the switch or the computer that handles climate control.

Thanks fo the responses.
I set the temp to max heat on both sides and I turn the auto function off. THe air is directed to the floor only.
I have had two dealers state that in this state it is normal for the AC to turn on to rid the heat of moisture.
They also said they checked another c5 and it did the same thing.
I don't every remember getting moisture in the heat with any car I owned except when they have a leaky heater core.

Makes me glad I have the plain ole manual one :eek:
I like having complete control over my surroundings... But I do appreciate the climate control system in the Lexus... just don't think its a plus to have in the C5... but then again... thats why I got the FRC..

The moisture they are talking about is the humidity. The A/C and heater combo lower the humidity. That's how dehumidifiers work, too.
