Re: "Crack", "Snap" - when turning, low speed ... (bruce1)
bliss-
I have this "clunk" from the drivers rear, and as you know we've been discussing that noise on other threads. I don't think your noise is the same thing at all........I suspect it's your differential. I had the same problem you describe in my 94 Z28 and a fluid change, with additive, completely eliminated the problem for the remaining 75K miles that I drove it. Your noise happens on slow speed turns and manuvering, right? Our 'clunk' happens when letting the clutch in, going straight, in 1st or reverse, alternately. There is some very small slop in our drivetrain at the wheel area, and the clunk is the noise from the slop shifting from no load to applied load.
Anyway, try a diff oil change FIRST. I strongly suspect that your niose is coming from the limited slip clutches, and the oil change should eliminate the problem.

I have this same freakin noise...it is mostly up front...Driver's side. It happens when turning or going over bumps..sounds like something is hitting the wheel well. Any clues?
Re: "Crack", "Snap" - when turning, low speed ... (z06bliss)
Anyone ever experience, some kind of "crack" or "snap" type noise, very randomly - not always - when turning the wheel SLIGHTLY ? Kinda like when you manuever your car in and out of a driveway, or a parking spot ? Very hard to describe ...
z06bliss,
If the noise is coming from the steering wheel area,
check in with your dealer. I THINK there is a TSB covering this noise.
Re: "Crack", "Snap" - when turning, low speed ... (z06bliss)
bliss,
I shoulda been paying attention......I thought you had a rear end noise. Neeeeeverr miiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnd.
However, I DID fix my clunking niose after a tip from C5-Tech. I'll explain in that other "clunk" thread.
As for your front end "knock", I have that too when turning the wheel slightly to the right. It's very subtle, but it's there. I'm interested in what you learn when you take your car in.
Re: "Crack", "Snap" - when turning, low speed ... (z06bliss)
I've never had this problem with my C5, but I did have the sounds you are describing with my 1991 C4. The problem was the bolts that held the rack and pinion unit in place were loose. I torqued them down properly, and the noises went away. Hope your problem is this easilly fixed.
Yup. I would recommend you look where Jim looked. I had similar noise on another vehicle and it was steering rack needing to be tightened down. I thought it might be ball joints going so I sought the help of a professional. Steering and brakes. I NEVER fool with em.
Oh and tracy, I heard it the way you did the first time too.
Re: "Crack", "Snap" - when turning, low speed ... (z06bliss)
I had my steering column off yesterday and was studying its internals. There are two little plastic "hemispheres" inside a u-joint about 8 inches or so from the steering wheel in the steering column. If there is noticable resistance when you turn the wheel (if you turn the wheel with the engine off for example) you can see significant flex/separation in these two plastic hemispheres. I don't know whether these are some type of dampening device or what, but I noticed that one of those plastic hemispheres is cracked on mine. It doesn't seem to affect things, at least when the engine is running so I didn't worry about it but I sure am more careful about wrenching the steering wheel with the engine off now that I know those things are in there and one is cracked.
I wonder if these things get cracked bad enough or broken, if the cracking noise could be coming from there. The sound would be coming from right behind the steering wheel if so.
