Default Chjeck engine light - need help!!

Here is what I have:
Hello all,

My 2002 with 13K miles just started running rough, gas milage went from 198. mpg to 12.6 mpg and I found the codes below stored as current:

P0171
p0174

It says Fuel Trim system lean for bank 1 and 2.

When I get on the gas I get the lean ping sound from under the hood. I new that it meant lean but thought it was a fuel issue even though I use super premium.

Can you help by telling me what is the cause of these codes and what $$ / parts I may need???

Thanks again,

As you learned, those are lean codes. Since you have it on both sides (bank1 & bank2 = driver side & passenger side, respectively), it likely has a single cause.

Check the easy stuff first. Verify that your air filter isn't dirty or clogged, and that there are no air flow obstructions between the MAF and throttle body. Next, check for vacuum leaks and verify that your oil fill cap and dipstick are seated properly. Using a length of rubber hose as a stethascope can be useful for hearing vaccum hiss over the engine noise. Some of the suspect areas are the manifold bolts and injector O-rings.

After that, it gets a bit more involved. You may have to look at the O2 sensors, as well as verify that you don't have any exhaust leaks upstream of them. It's also possible you could have bad gas or dirty injectors. Just take a systematic troubleshooting approach, and let us know how you make out.

GL!

Thanks for the advise.... I filled up with Sunoco 93 today after the probelm started. I don't knowm if it will help and after 30 miles it has not. It looks like I am off to Mr. Goodwrench and the old Corvette Tax!

I am going to check the oil cap and dipstick tomorrow before I go to the dealer!

Thanks again all and if anyone else has any thoughts please add to this thread.

Could be a dirty fuel filter.

Many thanks all for comments!

Mr. Goodwrench fixed the problem ..... 3 injectors were dirty most likely due to bad gas from the change over that is going on to the new fuel mixtures....
