OK - I live in Cali, I want the most radical cam I can put in and pass smog - I'm not doing heads either, maybe later. I'm in between the hotcam (It features .525" intake and exhaust lift, 219/228 degrees duration @ .050" and 112 degree lobe centers), the T1 cam from MTI (.558 221/221 112), and comp cam (216/220 .525 .532 114). I have no idea what these numbers mean?!?!? Cam guys give me your opinions please....
JMTC: I'm running that 216/220 cam in my A4 with some programming. Its a great cam, solid daily driver, passes CA emissions and still has punch. At 850RPM idle you barely know there is a cam there. However, this one leaves alot at the top-end compared to others... If your gonna do it, with your 6sp I would definitely consider more cam...
I'm not sure if the T1 would skate on CA emissions. The hotcam would be close. The overlap & that 112 LSA is going to be tough...I believe some guys here and on the ls1 board have posted they have passed emissions with the hotcam, but, be careful...
How about a slight variation: the B1? Similar profile as the T1 but on a 114LSA & should still get by with CA emissions...
Call up MMS and get their 218/218 114 camshaft. It will pass smog (if you keep the cats on), makes good power, and idles well. I'd suggest doing some stage 1 or 2 heads at the same time.
