The Helms manuals didn't help me at all. YMMV. I couldn't find any single procedure for replacing the sensor. I just got the Helms manuals but to me, they look more like a hodge podge of different individual procedures just thrown into a book. It doesn't seem to really tell you how to do any one thing from start to finish but just points you to piecemeal chunks of things here and there. Anyway, thanks C5-TECH! Your info was more useful than the manuals. I did get some useful info from some of the diagrams in the manuals though which told me that you don't need to spread any couplings to remove the intermediate steering shaft. At least on my 99, all that was required was to remove the two bolts at the ends and it slid right out.

Excellent diagrams and description...You are correct,1997-1998 has the upper steering shaft coupler that has to be slightly spread, where as 1999-2001 simply slides into a slot...Also note that those equipped with telescopic column are more difficult in that the telescopic actuator mounted to the column makes for alot of manuevering in order for the column to clear during removal...FYI,warranty time pays us 2.0 for this operation, and thats including diagnoses :mad :smash: :boxing

Good writeup. Glad to see you got it done without much trouble.
As far as the service Manuals are concerned, they take some getting used to. Once you know the general layout, it's easy to find things.
And the reason they don't give the entire procedure straight through is to avoid duplication. Since so many procedures have the same sub components it would be a waste of paper and would probably result in a set of manuals 3 times bigger than they already are.

Mike,
I really must commend you for that great summary of your steering sensor replacement. Awesome...
I've had my sensor replaced at the dealer 3 times and I am still plagued by the "Service Active Handling" message.
I'm going back for the 4th time next week! I'm hoping C5-TECH or c4c5 Specialist can offer some insight as to how I can overcome this problem. I think they already checked the IAT connectors but what else is there?
Re: Steering sensor replacement: full procedure with pics! (Silver2k)
If your sensor has been replaced 3 times and you still have trouble, it could be something else. Have you checked your codes to see which code(s) are setting? If they are steering sensor related, the problem could be a short/open circuit in the wiring going *to* the sensor. It could also be a problem with whatever module the sensor is connected to on the other end. I find it hard to believe that 3 sensors would be bad or installed improperly, so I'd ask them to start checking the other related parts in the circuit. There are procedures in the Helm's manual for example where you use a scan tool to check the angle reported by the analog output of the sensor and compare it to the digital output (the sensor has both), turn the steering wheel while watching the angle change, etc. These things need to be done before just slapping another sensor on there.
Re: Steering sensor replacement: full procedure with pics! (mchaney)
I did not buy the factory service manuals because the ones for my C4 were also a hodgepodge of separate topics, some either out of date or from other vehicles. Very rarely did it have correct information or discriptions of procedures. For example, I needed to replace a horn relay, and the manual said "See section XX.D." Guess what section was missing between XX.C and XX.E. I had to probe around the dash with a stethascope while hitting the horn button to find it behind the radio. Yucks!
