i've got a car coming in this afternoon for a set, easiest way to do it is with some 'S' hooks or long zip ties(thanks 6spd98) to compress the shocks for both removal and install or remove the upper control arms on the front

yeah...I was trying to find that article to show it to someone..as well as for my own 411. He was saying something about a tool that compresses them that would be better/safer.

The zip ties really aren't all that un-safe. The shocks don't just fling open once they get loose, they extend slowly, so you'll be good to go. Just make sure you use good ones and they won't break, so you'll be less-likely to start cussing.

The zip ties are very easy to use. When you release them, the shock slowly extends, so even if a zip tie broke, it wouldn't be a big deal. Before I changed my shocks I called around to all the auto stores for a tool to compress the shocks. No one had heard of it and all said to use a piece of wire or zip ties. It really is very easy.

Zip ties, rope, anything that will tie together.

If it comes undone and the shock extends (which it does slowly)... just push it back in. Might have to use a muscle or two and/or put your weight behind it, but you can push it back in.

I was pretty nervous at first. For some reason I had it in my head that if the zip tie broke, the shock would spring out, hit me in the face, blind me and perhaps kill me. lol
In reality, it just slowly expands.

compressing springs or coilovers may do that but not a shock. Its like the shocks on your hood. Those dont go flying through the hood everytime you open it
