My 97 coupe has 85k on it and just started making a metallic clanking sound under acceleration and braking. Here are the weird symptoms:
1) Under acceleration at any speed it makes the sound.
2) If I accelerate in reverse there is no sound but the sound come when I brake
3) If I let the car roll down hill backwards in neutral with the engine running and brake the sound happens
4) If I roll backward with the engine off and brake the sound does not happen.
5) If I rev the engine in park the sound only happens when I let off of the gas and the engine is going back to idle.
6) there is no sound at idle
7) The oil pressure display reads 130 psi and gauge is pegged
Yeah, the sender is definately a problem in these cars, so that's why I'm thinking they aren't related. I'm sure someone will step in and help out. Wish I could, but it just seems really strange. Good Luck!!
It sounds like the problem is somewhere in the drive train as the noise only occurs when the engine and transmission are engaged.
Have you jacked up the car and inspected the drive - line. If you have a manual, you might want to pull bell-housing cover and inspect clutch area and front of torque tube.
