Default Good Transmission Cooler kit?

My 03 A4 that I purchased in January (with only 14,000 miles on it) turned out to be leaking transmission fluid from the seal between the tranny and diff. After this $900 repair I have begun to think about why a car with such low miles would have a bad seal. Maybe it was that way since new and the prior two owners just let it drip - but I find it hard to believe that it leaked while still under warantee. Its got the 315 gearing and I notice that the tranny runs hotter than our other C5 that has the standard gears. Today it got up to 67 degrees outside and after about 15 minutes of in-town driving the tranny was 215 degrees and probably would have kept climbing if I didn't end my ride. I'm afraid that I'll cook all the new seals and end up right back at the tranny shop. What's a good cooler that I can have the transmission shop install for me?

I got the B&M Tranny cooler and paid $55 for it. I wouldn't waste your time with paying someone to install it, it took me about 15 minutes to install it and it is very easy.

I am running about 185 degree on a 90 degree day with my 3:15 rear-end and a bigger torq converter and driving it hard.

Default tranny cooler

Get a B&M 24,000 super cooler from Summit. It comes with more parts than you will need to hook it up. Cut into the top tranny line on your radiator to run to the cooler and run the cooler return line back to the line you cut.

I am going to be putting one on mine in a week or two. Is the top line the line (flow) from the tranny to the radiator or from the radiator to the tranny?

Also, I heard that of you just fill it (the cooler) with fluid during installation, that the tranny fluid level won't change. Any truth to this?

The top line is the return line to the tranny from the radiator.

If you would like to use adapters instead of cutting your transmission lines, then use a B&M cooler with 1/2" NPT fittings such as #70266 and these parts:

(2) Aeroquip FCM2013 –6 AN to ½ NPT male adapter (cooler)

(1) Aeroquip FCM1022 –6 AN 45* swivel hose end (trans return line)

(2) Aeroquip FCM4032 –6 AN 90* swivel hose end (cooler)

(1) Aeroquip FCM4042 –6 AN 120* swivel hose end (radiator)

(2) Aeroquip FCM2108 –6 AN to 5/8 –18 inverted flare adapter (radiator & trans return line)

(1) Aeroquip FCA0606 –6 AN AQP racing hose, 6ft.

(1) GM # 442338 (or similar) 5/8 –18 inverted flare female union (trans return line)

GM# 442338 is available from any GM dealer.
You can get all of the Aeroquip parts from Summit Racing. Note: Summit puts a prefix in front of the number (AER-) www.summitracing.com/

Aeroquip website: http://www.aeroquip.com/pages/lit.html

B&M uses ½ NPT, female fittings on their coolers, others may be different.
GM used the 5/8 –18 inverted flare fittings, through at least 2000, maybe later, and then it was changed to something else.

If you don’t mind cutting the transmission lines and have a stock converter the BMM-70264 is a good choice. If you have an a high stall converter and like to take it to the strip from time to time the BMM-70264 would probably be ok but the BMM-70266 or BMM-70270 would be better. If you like to take it to a HPDE from time to time then the BMM-70266/BMM-70270 would be the smallest that you should consider

Default wrong fittings came with B&M tranny cooler

I got the B&M cooler. My husband got it attached to the radiator and the hoses run up into the engine compartment. But neither one of the two sets of fittings (1 male and 1 female in each set) was the correct size for my car. So we went to two different auto parts stores and found nothing that would work. Even went to a Home Depo and bought some fittings but they didn't work (wrong diameter AND wrong threads). I guess tomorrow we will call B&M and see if they have the correct fittings available. Unless someone on this forum can help? My car is an 03.

Thanks.

I got the 70264 kit and mounted the cooler in front of the AC condenser, on the passengers side with the long side vertical, and near the top. I did not hook it up to the transmission lines yet, but as the previous poster indicated the parts probably do not match. So, I guess I have to do the same thing, go look for fittings

My concern is that this morning I noticed that my coolant temp was about 20 degrees higher than normal. It got higher at traffic lights, and dropped a little while driving. The outside temp is <70 and the coolant was 220. I took a look, and nothing else seems to be wrong, the fan was on (directly behind where I mounted the cooler).

Did I mount this incorrectly? Is there a better way to mount it?
