One or both of my driveshaft bearings are bad (at 22K miles...lucky me). Apparently the entire driveline needs to be pulled to replace these bearings. Does anybody know how long it will take for a professional to do this job? What is a reasonable cost estimate?
I just replaced the whole torque tube with another used one to save myself the trouble of trying to find the bearings and rebuilding the original unit...GM lists the part as not serviceable, but search around on here and you'll find the part no's. $300 for a used one sounded like a safer/easier bet to me.
and, replacement is about the same work as a clutch job...drop the rear cradle and pull the torque tube from the engine, unbolt from tranny and there ya go, i did the whole job in a day or so without a lift
Ouch, 22k miles? I'd probably go the torque tube replacement route as well....if for no other reason than mechanic will probably have experience with that job. It'll probably also be cheaper in terms of labor.
I think you're looking at about 8-10 hours max in terms of labor. Even in socal I doubt you should be paying over $100/hr labor.
Since you are in Ca. I would give Rancho Recycling in Sacramento a call. They buy and sell GM hi performance cars for parts. They always have a ton of wrecked Vettes. Number is 800/722-6016 and ask for Larry or Francis.
