Default Calling C4C5 Specialist

C4C5 Specialist, I'm sure that you have changed the oil on the '01 C5. How many quarts do you use when you change the oil and filter? I know that I definitely drained all the oil (first oil change yesterday morning...1,382miles, oil was 5 months old) and there was definitely close to, if not over, 7 quarts of oil in the used oil container. I went ahead and put 6 and half quarts as per the owner's manual and after checking the level (with that horrible dipstick) I would say that I am close, but not yet filling in the second hole on the dipstick at MAX (this is after letting it sit for approxitemately 20-30 minutes after having driven 20 minutes or so). Is there really a difference in the size of the oil pan from the '97 - '00 models versus the '01? Is the '01 oil pan larger? Does the service/shop manual call for 7 quarts or 6 and a half? Or did the factory overfill a bit on purpose? I remember when I first picked up the car and checked the oil the first day that I could see some oil just above the Max mark on the dipstick and the second little hole had some oil in it. Once I hit about 1,100 miles the second little hole on the dipstick was not covered. Was it possible that the dealership overfilled it a bit just prior to delivery? Anyway, I put in the 6 and half quarts of Mobil One 5W-30 according to the owner's manual. Your thoughts? Experiences? Thanks!

Due to the different dipstick tube configuration on the 2001,it takes 7 qts to bring level to the full mark...

C-5 Tech, that doesn't really make any sense. Does the shop manual for the '01 model state that the proper fill is seven quarts? (and the shop manuals for the '97-'00 shop manuals state 6 and half quarts?). In other words just because they changed the dipstick configuration, that shouldn't change the actual capacity for the which the LS1 is rated. By adding the extra half quart, you satisfy the dipstick reading but in reality you are "overfilling" by a half quart. Wouldn't it be safer to stay with the 6 and half quarts rather than overfilling by a half quart?

HI there,
Honestly, it all depends on how long your engine is given to drain. I know sometimes, I have to drain for only 5 mins, and fill it due to customer requests to be in and out.
Then, it may only take 6.3 or 6.4. I know it sounds weird, however, it is fact, that due to the oil pan configuration, some oil remains inside the gullwing sections. I have seen them take as little as 6.3, and as much as 7.0 to obtain a full mark.
c-5tech is, as always, on his game, as the dipstick change did affect some differences. However, each drain time could yield different results, and could change how much you have to add.
If you are full after the change, your fine, and I would NOT worry, sounds like you have done well.
Best to you, c4c5

C4C5Specialist, thanks for your reply. Well, I guess the only way to solve this is to add 6 3/4 qts and then leave it where it is. But it's funny how it's only the '01 owners who are noting this 7 quart re-fill. I haven't seen any '97 - '00 owners talking about 7 quart re-fills to make the "full" line on the dipstick. Kinda strange...don't you think?
