My 3-4 shift seems to be not as smooth as my 1-2 or 2-3 shift. It has more of a metal to metal, (not as smooth), feeling. There really is no more real resistence than the other shifts-just not as smooth. No noise associated with it and there are no other problems. The car has about 6200 miles.
Is there something to check out or is the difference just in my mind?
I'm not a tranny expert, but I did play one once in a movie. The 4th gear friction surface of the blocking ring has less surface area than the 1st,2nd,and 3rd blocking rings. Less surface area means not as well synchronization resulting in the 3-4 shift not being as smooth and a higher failure rate. At this point there is probably nothing wrong with your transmission. If it gets to the point of a 3-4 shift grind then its time to make a repair.
Thanks everybody. I kind of fugured there was no real issue but wanted to make sure since I bought it a couple fo months ago and had not driven since new. I am not opposed to changing the fluid but everything I read said that it "never" needed to be changed. With only 6K miles on the car and knowing that the origianl owner never thrashed it, (well inot his 60's and said he "never" drove it above 4K RPM's).
Thanks again for the great advice. I'll post back if there are any other issues.
