pre-cats

I have a 02' with stock pre-cats,
Question: pre-cats, whats the point? what purpose do they serve?

The Z06 didn't have them,so what does it take to remove them, besides a good saws-all.

I already have the Z06 cat back system, and want it to flow the best it can.

Thanks for the link, that kinda answers my question, from your post I deduct that I don't need them.

Was thinking more along the lines if cutting them out and replacing with a pipe,

that'll work - unless you're in an area that does visual inspections as part of the smog testing.

But then again... the stoners that work at these places may never notice it.
