A/C works fine, no problem. I have the standard control head, when I set the fan to setting 1 or 2 I get nothing out of it. If I use the higher fan settings it works fine. Any idea what the problem might be? Should I just get another control head, or am I looking in the wrong direction?
Thanks in advance Bob
You should check the blower control unit, I don't have the resistor values here. I need to replace mine because the blower runs as soon as the battery is connected.
Remove the panel under the glove box and you'll see it right there with about four heavy wires feeding into it.
I had a bad resistor on mine- lost speed 1. The original unit had a printed circuit board with the resistors printed on the board. The replacement unit has actual resistors in the form of coiled wires- like resistors from years ago. Guess they realized the PC stuff wasn't holding up.

No, the blower motor resistor is a complete module. No resistors to replace, it's all printed circuit. I bought one for a Sunfire, it cost about $28 from AutoZone (Wells).
Thanks for the help guy's. Must be a popular item, just got off the phone with my parts buddy at Chevrolet. They stock the item, very inexpensive, quick plug and play fix. Hopefully i'll pick it up today and all will be well. Thanks again for the direction and diagnosis. Bob
yup very common problem with GM. Happened to my friends cavalier and my sisters grandprix. The hardest part for their cars was getting the dash apart. Not such a hug deal with our cars, easy to get to the hvac stuff
Man, you just have to love this forum. Great group of helpful people. You were all right on with my problem. I just installed the part and my A/C is now operating perfectly again. Here are pics of the old unit, new UPDATED unit, and where it fit under the glovebox. Thanks again. Bob

I pay it forward by doing free repairs for many local members here, as well as giving away extra parts when I have them. This is a great community, you can never know enough and the boys were right on with their diagnosis. My buddy at Chevrolet hooked me up with the new updated part, and my son brought it to me. Nothing like a team repair.
THANK YOU!!!! This forum is great! I found my '98 with a dead battery for no apparent reason. When I put the battery charger on, the blower started to run!?! After removing the battery, charging, reinstalling and hooking it up, the blower motor still ran - full, and the switch had no effect. I removed the blower fuse (after disconnecting the battery first) and the blower stopped. After reading this forum, I now know what the problem is!! THANK YOU! $20 part at Advanced Auto
