2001 LS1 Auto...Developed a engine tick. Sounds like someone tapping a hammer lightly on pvc pipe in the rhythm of the engine idle. Replaced both belts on the engine tonight and it is still there. Rev the engine and it quiets down for a moment and then it is back. It seems worse when the engine is off for a few hours. I don't want to take it to a stealership. No check engine lights or codes. Car seems to run fine, just an irritating noise! Can anyone help a lady out????

Change your oil, but i always run ATF 1 qt through the engine for 5 min before i change mine to clean out the crap thats in it.
Can you be more specific about where the tick is coming from? Does it vary with rpm? DOes it change with AC on/off?
One thing it could be is an arcing plug wire or coil. Take off the coil covers and run the car in the dark (note: do not close the garage door) and look for a spark.
C5's are known for noisy valve trains and the 2001 can have piston slap issues.
Some claim that it goes away with boutique oils like AMSoil or Royal Purple. Others claim a higher flowing filter like the K&N helps quiet the noise....
I believe it's piston slap. It sounds worse after you restart the car after a couple/few hours just like you discribed.
Did you just have the oil changed by the dealership? For some reason it's not as noticable on old oil?!?
Don't count on a different oil filter with a higher flow to fix piston knock.
A different brand oil other than Mob 1 and lighter weight might help like a 0-30.

Well I went to pistonslap.com and they even had a sound file and I darn near thought it was my engine on it. Well, GM picked the wrong lady. They will be putting in a brand new LS1 engine in as soon as Corvette season is over! Checking my warranty now! Thanks Corvette family!
