Default Some first timer ?s

Hey guys,

I have been searching around learning for a while tonight and now I am starting to get confused and possing questions.

I have been seeing people posting.. 01' 3.15 A4 etc.

What is 3.15? Differential? Gears?

And A4 is?

I am a little confused there.

Also if you guys could just answer a few quick basic questions, I didn't get the answers from my searching, probably because everyone knows except me, lol, but bare with me, I am a new owner and I grew up around Mustangs.

I just got a 00' Z51 Vert.

Whats the RWHP rating for my car? At the crank? 1/4 Times?
My cars gears?
I know the engine is much more powerful than my Mustang, any forged internals?

Just curious about things like these.

Also some gas/oil questions.

1. Synthetic Oil only correct?
2. Guy I bought it from said 93 octane only. Now my mustang said 93 only also, but with the gas prices I always put 87 and it was fine. Is 93 absolutely necessary for the Vette, for instance are these cars specifically tuned for 93 octane? Because I know you can tune (with a handheld tuner) a Mustang to use only 93, but I just wanted to make sure the Vette wasn't already stock tuned for 93. Long story short, can I put 87 in my car?

I will have others... Thats it for now.

Thanks a bunch in advance!! Bare with my for now.. Im suck a newbie with Vettes. Never thought I'd own one so soon!

-Mike

Thanks, that was the kind of site I was looking for.

Now correct me if I am wrong...

A4 = Auto 4-speed

M6 = Manual 6-speed

Thats what I got from the article and seeing people use the abbreviations.

And I know the car has 345 bhp, but what is the hp to the wheels? The RWHP?

And what about the oil and gas, those questions are important, I need to know that so I don't screw up the car.

Thanks.

Default In a nutshell...

3:15=final drive ratio

A4=4 spd auto trans

rwhp=approx. 293 or so maybe, for stock? (Put it on a dyno, to know for sure.) FWhp=345

1/4=mid to upper 13's, I believe for stock.

1.Don't have to, but it is HIGHLY recommended!

2. ditto

Default 93 octane?

Welcome to the board!

The engine was designed for 93 octane usage. Why veer from manf. recommendations? I can't think of any corvette owner knowingly putting 87 octane in their vehicle. I know I wouldn't.
Having said that, call the dealer for more clarification on 87 octane usage, if you're determined to do it. My guess is, it's pretty much a no-no.

The following thread should answer your question on type of oil:

type of oil question

As for gasoline octane, here's what the 2003 Owner's Manual says. I would expect yours reads much the same:

Gasoline Octane

Use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane of 91 or higher for best performance. You may also use middle grade or regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may be slightly reduced. If the engine octane is less than 87, you may get a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise, you might damage your engine.
BTW, welcome to the Forum!

Ok so basically that said exactly what I thought it would.

91-93 Octane is definitely recommended for PEAK performance, but using 87 is not going to hurt the engine.

So thats good news at least for now, thanks a lot for that peice of info, that helps.

Incidentally, if you do not have an Owner's Manual, you can get free on-line access to an electronic copy specific to your model year by going to the following GM web site and registering. Registration is free also. Once your registration is complete, just login to the site and go to My Glove Box and you will see a link to take you to the Owner's Manual:

https://www.mygmlink.com/

Hope this helps.

Personally, I use only 91 octane or higher. (91 octane is about the highest we can find locally.) At only 7 or 8 cents difference per gallon between 91 octane and mid grade, there's just not that much $ savings, even with a full tank fill up. You do need to be mindful and watch for detonation (engine knock) with lower grade gasoline.
