Default 97'-00' vs 01'-04' Alternator Difference?

Wondering what the difference is. I was told there is a 10 amp difference, and uses a clutch pulley. Will a 01' up work on my 99'?

Clutch is for A4 trans only. If you have a 01+ higher output alternator your PCM will trip charge error codes. You have to use the correct output alternator or have PCM reflashed at dealer.

see this link.
Until very recently Evil-Twin was a CF member... a GM engineer who worked for several years on the C5.
He explained many times that the alternators were year specific.
See this post and see if it answers your question
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ght=alternator

If not I suggest you do an advanced search under his id and keywords alternator to see the rest of his posts on the topic.

What happened to Evil Twin? His intimate knowledge of the C5 from his previous job have been invaluable to CF members.

He just recently got angry at someone questioning him and left the forum. Go to

the second post has a link to ET's final post and his reason for leaving.

There was a post recently on this site by Evit Twin and PLEASE search for that post as it exhaustively explained why you must use the correct alternator application. Evidently GM changed/replaced the part number for the alternator for 97-00 which set off a lot of confusion.

My recollection was that any alternator other than one spcific for that year run would send the inappropiate current to the computer causing the ECM to shut down or go to limp mode. (I know this is not exact but a concept of what happens) Please don't flame me.

I wonder if the voltage difference be changed with a tuner to use the later model?

My alternator went out in my 05 so i just put in one from my 98 until i take it in. Not a single code or problem in 2 weeks.

But your 05 has newer software. I think the problem is putting a newer alt. on a older car.

You need to use a '97-'00 OEM 10246634 alternator or have a reflash done. I tried an aftermarket rebuilt original and had problems. The orignal PCM programming is very fussy.
