My '98 coupe with 80K sometimes grinds going into 6th. Not hard, but it's there. Not all the time, and not with any pattern I can pick out. Thought I might not be depressing the clutch fully or letting it out too far on shift or something but that doesn't seem to be the cause. It seems to occur most predictably if I gently accelerate to maybe 70-75 in 5th and then shift easily into 6th. If I shift 5-6 at lower speeds it doesn't seem a problem.
I'm ready to change out tranny fluid and differential while I am at it. Some threads in here suggest that the lube change helps with the difficulty some experience shifting into 1st, which I have from time to time as well.
It would be great if lube change is all that it needs, but might it be something more serious?
Sounds like your synchronizers are worn out for sixth gear. James
That's probably what it is. The part that baffles me is that it does not do it all the time. I would have thought the problem would occur with every shift with the synchronizers being bad.
I'm not ecstatic and about swapping out the tranny but may not have a choice. My suspicion is that the cost to have a dealer put in the synchronizer is going to cost as much as buying a low mileage used tranny.
I have a 98 with 97,000 miles and synthetic fluid in my transmission. I noticed my transmission doing this too, but only when I don't fully depress the clutch. It has never done it with the clutch fully depressed. I think it is more clutch/fluid related.

You stated in your first post, it doesn't do it at slower speeds. The tranny gears are turning slower, so it is easier to get the gears to mesh. There could be any number of things wrong, but it sounds to me like the synchros. Does your clutch feel different to you (is it engaging in the same place, does the pedal feel softer/more firm)? Also if it is clutch fluid related, it should be doing it in all the gears, not just one gear. James

I have also noticed that if I try to shift from 4th to 6th and the speed is 45 mph or less that it scrapes a little as well once in awhile, like it's really not happy about going into 6th at a low speed.
The clutch feels the same and seems to engage/disengage at the same place. My first thougth (hope) was that maybe the clutch slave cylinder was leaking down intermittently or something. Don't think that it the case.
