Hi,
I have searched for this topic, but am still confused! I have a 1999 A4 with 3400 miles and twice today I have received a message on my DIC that says "service column lock", but I am still able to drive the car? What am I missing? I thought this would have locked up the car?
C-5 Tech,
You are right! The column is unlocked with the key out! I did not even think about checking it without the key in. I was just happy when I was able to drive home. I guess I will have to take it to the dealer. Thanks again for your help! I love this forum!

Save your self the trip.Pull fuse #25 (BCM1 FUSE) at the right footwell fuse box and the BCM will reset, giving you an operational column lock again...Until next time,of course ;) ...Dont be alarmed but you will most likely see the "pull key wait 10 seconds" message after you reinstall the fuse...
Now I am confused! Is this something that needs to be replaced? I am worried that when it fails again it will be stuck in the "locked" position. Would this procedure work if that happens?
If you are out of warranty, and dont fall under the column lock recall VIN# break points,I would purchase the column lock bypass sold here on the forum.
It is possible (and more common) that next time it could lock in the "locked" position...Pulling fuse 25 does not always work when stuck in the "locked" position...
Thanks again for your help! I am still under warranty, so I believe I will let the dealer try and handle this! Is there any problem with me currently not resetting the fuse?(other than the fact that my column is unlocked) I don't want to run the risk of resetting it and having it lock on me before the dealer gets to it!
In some instances, even when stuck in the unlocked position,shut-down mode can occur (go 10 feet and stall)...Again,pulling fuse #25 and re-installing will correct this.
There are so many different variables that cause column lock failures. The only solution would be to produce a BCM with no column lock circuitry, that would have to be engineered differently for each model year, and installed in every C-5...Unlike a PCM,a BCM can not not be programmend to acomplish this,it would require replacement$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
