I need to replace my Fuel Filter after noticing (and smelling) a significant leak. I have a 1997 with a M6. It doesn't look like it would be to tough to get to.
My question is how important is it for me to get the Fuel Filter disconnect tool? Will the job be that much easier with the tool? Can I accomplish this without the tool? What size disconnect tool does the 97 take?
I have a 2000 and found that using the disconnect tool certainly made it easier. Also having it up on jacks or the lift is great. Sorry don't remember the size, if I remember correctly I bought it at Autozone and it was a two pack. Good luck. Make sure you hear the snap when you put the new filter back in and if you can start the car while still on the lift. I was in a real hurry the last time I changed one and gas was spewing every where and fast.

Sounds like it's worth spending a few more bucks for the tool. I'll make sure to check for leaks prior to lowering back down. Thanks for the advise.
I went ahead and bought the varity pack from Autozone. Got it home and nothing fit. I went ahead and replaced without the tool. It wasn't really that hard to do. I just used a small screwdrive to depress the connects. No more leaking filter. Yee Haa !
Its worth investing in the tool, but I did it myself in the garage with only a small screwdriver....just so you know it can be done without the tool. Good luck
It can be done without a tool but if making a mistake it can be costly.
I know a guy who did this and being the gas line from back of car to front is like made of plastic and he was twisting to get filter off and snapped the end of plastic line off and then dealer charged him $400 to replace that long 1 piece tube
