Sorry if this has been covered before, but I searched and didn't find anything.
Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but does anyone have any tips for changing the AC serpentine drive belt on a C5?
The hard AC lines run right on top of the tensioner, so you can't get a long extension on it, and a wrench hits the balancer pulley before the tensioner is loose enough.
YES!!!!, i've swapped motors in these cars, and I can say that belt kicked my azz 2 weeks ago, i usually deal w/ M6/12 cars and had an A4 in the shop, i removed the belt no problem, spent/wasted 20 minutes trying to get it back on, finally moved the car onto the lift and it was a 30 second job
btw, it's the trans cooler lines that run DIRECTLY in front of the a/c tensioner
Did mine from the top. Got it on as best I could leaving partialy off the top of the AC pully and then bumped the engine with the key to hop it on. Maybe not the best way, but it worked.
I justed changed mine for the second time and this time I used a wrench to loosen the tensioner and while holding it I reached down and slipped the belt off the idler pully which is just above tensioner. After backing off on tensioner, I pulled the wrench out of the way and there was enough slack in the belt to slip it on off.
This time I put on a Goodyear Gatorback belt because the other new belt did not solve my squeaks.
Thanks for all the quick help. I'll try it from the bottom tonight. I thought of that, but it didn't look like there was room from there either, but I guess there is.
