When refilling an A4 after a filter change, can I just pour ithe ATF in the fluid return line at the radiator? Engine off, of course. Seems easier than grovelling around underneath with a half-a$$ed pump set-up.
I've done it that way a couple of times but the thing you have to remember is your tranny is not correctly serviced until you get under it while it's running with the trans temp at the correct operating temperature and you pull the plug on the side of the pan.
I replaced a couple of transmissions and I did the initial servicing by pumping the fluid into the return line then I started the car and let it get up to operating temperature, popped the plug out of the side and let fluid drain out or pumped additional fluid in until the proper level is reached.
I would do the correct fluid level check after the initial fill- I just want to avoid pumping 6 or so quarts of ATF from the underside of the car while I'm on my back. Also, the idea of the car running all the while I do the pump switching, etc 5 times doesn't sound too good to me. Or is it OK to run the tranny when it is 6 qts low (in park, not under load)?
