What model year is your car? Model years 1997 through 1999 came with the passive keyless entry. Later model years did not have this feature.

For later model years (2000 on), you must first push the unlock button on the FOB each time before opening the door and entering the car in order for your memory settings to be recalled when the key is inserted into the ignition switch. Too, the door must be closed before inserting the key. Otherwise, you will have to push the memory button. This is the way the system is designed. Also, certain actions such as removing the key or cranking the engine before memory recall is complete will interrupt the recall and you will then have to use the memory button to complete the recall. This and more should all be covered in your owner's manual under Keyless Entry System and Memory and you may want to review those sections.

I believe the passive keyless entry works much the same when the passive feature is set to "OFF". Hopefully someone who has the passive keyless entry will correct me on this if I'm wrong. And, for those with the passive system, I would think their owner's manual would contain more info on this too.

HTH and good luck.

In most instances, I think your statement is correct. From my time here on the Forum, I've found the memory function to be one of the most misunderstood features of the C5. Pressing the "Unlock" button on the FOB is what initializes the memory recall which starts when the door is closed and the key is inserted into the ignition. Make it a habit to always press the FOB "Unlock" button before opening the door and entering the car and I think many of your problems may be solved.
