Question for Differential Experts
I was just wondering what is inside this Getrag (SP?) unit that supposedly makes a gear swap such a daunting task. From all my research, it seems that there are some Getrag-specific tools that are needed, but I can't figure out what exactly these tools are and / or what they are used for.
I am asking this because I have a 4.10 gear set on order for my '00 FRC, and I am wondering why I can't do this myself.
I am thoroughly familiar with rebuilding and setting up a solid axle rear end like the GM 10-bolt, etc., and my line of thinking is that a Ring & Pinion is [in theory] a Ring & Pinion is a Ring & Pinion...am I right? I've got a dial indicator, hydraulic press, and so on, so what else am I missing (besides the aforementioned tools)? Is there an easy source I can go to for torque specs, etc.?
Surely someone out here in Vette-land has done this one themselves...
Thank you for your insight,
Brent

I have heard the set costs a few hundred dollars. If I remember correctly, it was about $1200. There are some on the forum here who have done it and one of them had his set of tools for sale. You might do a post to find him. I have a friend who has been a mechanic for almost forty years who tried to do one with his regular rear end pullers, dial indicators, etc.. said he would not do another one. I dont know what gears you have in yours now, but if they are 3:15s, 3:42s, You can usually sell them for about half the cost of a brand new diff($1100-1200) and its pretty easy to just swap the whole diff.
