It depends on how you drive your car. If you abuse the car you can count on replacing the tranny at some point.

there is a lot of info in the sticky above the general forum section. My 98 had dim A/C, bad reverse syncro, bad oil pressure sending unit, when I had it. 1st owner (I was third) had a lot more problems.

I bought my 1998 A4 C5 earlier this year from the original owner. The automatic has, of yet, given me no problems. I do drive very spirited but do not "shift with the stick" as some others on the forum do. When I bought it I changed ALL fluids over to synthetic......oil, tranny, and rear diff. The problem with the autos is that if you insist on abusing it chances are it will go south on you. Cheap insurance is regular maintenance including synthetic fluid and a good tranny cooler. High fluid temps = tranny death.

98 owner... your tire sensors are really old... good chance they already dont' work or will soon go out if they haven't been replaced... Climate control being dim... but you can fix that with a little of your time... dont' let the dealer fix it.. thats pretty much it.... 114k on mine and i'm modding it fast... and she loves it... and i love her...

'98 convertible here, runs great, but yes the tire sensors are bad, and I've had my share of electrical problems. Don't forget, it's a Chevy, and with that comes crap reputation that has developed over the last few decades.

I have a 98 A4 that I have rebuilt with A&A's forged motor and P1SC. Before I tore it down, the car had 170k miles on it. I am the original owner. Never raced the car as it was my daily driver. When we pulled the heads off the engine, the insides looked brand new. It never used any oil. The transmission never gave me any problems until I put on the supercharger and other mods. That promptly shredded the automatic. The only problems I ever had with the car was the wheel bearing on the drivers side went out - expensive puppies!!! Other than that, the water pump went out at the 170k mark which is why I changed everything up then. Of course, I also had the oil pressure sensor problem thaty everyone has around 60k miles. Other than that, best dang car I have ever owned.

98 A4 Coupe 75K miles , it is my daily driver in the summer and driven hard on the back roads. not one bad problem other than dirty ground connections. Going to synthetic trans fluid this summer. TPS still working. Just Love this thing, My Fourth starting with a 57.

Bought my 98 with 68k two years ago, now has 82k (not my DD). I have replaced the oil pressure sensor, water pump and had the leaky differential fixed. After these things were taken care of, it has been perfect! I couldn't be happier with it. I have toyed with buying a newer C5, but I haven't found a good enough reason yet to actually do it.

The only problem that I haven't caused was the headlamp module went bad. This is with over 50k on the clock.

18k with only 34k miles is a STEAL! If you don't buy it I will. But check and make sure it has not been damaged in the past. 98's are good cars, you will more than likely have a few bugs here and there, but 98's are great c5's...
