have a 98 C5 vette, can you install just new tires either bfg comp t/a or say nitto tires but just put them on the rear and leave the stock run flats on the front or do you have to change all four at the same time, how will this affect handling, what i am trying to do is find a set of tires for the rear that will work at the drag strip but still be able to use them on the street without haveing to replace the front tires yet, any ideas? burt
Burt,
I am currently running P-zero non runflt on the rear of my car with stock runflats up front. I think it's fine. But, you might notice the front of the car plowing under extreme conditions(ie: autocross) due to superior traction in the rear. If I plant my foot comming out of a HARD turn, the front will plow a bit insted of the rear sliding out. Understeer insted of typical oversteer. If you are intrested in doing this for drag racing or street driving, You will be fine. Don't waste the money for fronts untill you need to. My 2 cents. :hat
There might be the same concerns that existed 30 years ago when radial tires started to become popular and available. Conventional wisdom was to not mix radials and bias plys because of the different reaction characteristics in turns because of sidewall flex. Now, the bigest thing about run flats is their super stiff sidewalls, and RF tires may react differently than non ronflats on the other axle causing an imbalance. Experience and/or testing is needed to obtain a good answer to your question.
I'd go ahead and leave the run flats up front. If you plan to ever get away from the drag strip and do some road racing or auto crossing, you may want to switch out the run flats. You'll also want to dump the rears and probably go with some road racing tires.
If you're looking at some drag radials, I'd go with the nittos. They'll last 3X longer than the BFG's, handle better under wet conditions, and the BFG drag radials have been on nationwide stockout for the past couple months.
I'm running some 335/30/18 BFG Comp T/A ZR's on the rears (18x11 rims) at the drag strip. The fronts are still run flats, and I replace the rears with the run flats after I get home from the drag strip.
Would your size tire fit on a 18 X 10.5 rim? What rim manufacturer do you use for your rears?
I too want to find something to run on at the track and change off when getting home. I would like to keep my Z06 Repro look at the track and on the street.
I doubt it would safely fit a 10.5 . They BARELY fit the 11, and I do mean barely. Given that you will be exposing them to drag strip conditions, I'd go with some 315's. You don't want to risk pulling the tire off the rims when lauching.
I bought the rear rims used from J99FRC...they are ForgeLine rims. They look similar enough to the chrome 2001 rims for me.
In your case, I'd get some repro Z06 rears to keep the look consistent. Maybe the repro rims can be ordered in 18x11?
