Guys--Tell me, if we have this black box mounted on our cars, how and what do we do to disable it and if we do that , are there ramifications? Does it call big brother to get you out of bed at night ? or does the dealer "Disavow " any knowledge of your car to G.M.? Enquiring minds want to know?! I never heard anything from those who did or did not disconnect and what they discovered. Thanks,
the black box is affixed to the drivers side seat.. there are two plugs coming out of it.. it is suppose to give details of driving situations.. rev limit speed etc..I doubt you could just disconnect it.. it must be looped into the system ...
have not seen anyone bypass it here on the forum..the information in the box.. is more negative than positive.. if you get killed racing... the box may cause liabilities toward your family.. I can't think of a single positive thing it could be used for..
Guys--I have heard everyone say it would collect info on you but never what they'd do to you or what would occur if it were disconnected. How about it, can anyone atleast tell me what could hypothetically happen? (Especially a Corvette Mechanic!) Thanks,

Re: Onboard Black Box question? (Streetrod)
I've also been curious about this. I assume it doesn't store enough data to get you into trouble, or does it?
I'd suck to go into the dealership with an engine failure and have the tech tell you "sorry, we won't cover this under warranty, you drove the car too hard."
:nono:
A friend was telling me someone he knows had a Cadillac with a 4-6-8 engine that wasn't running right. He was told he exceeded 90 mph therefore the warrenty was void.
He traded the car in as quickly as he could.
Don't know how true the story is since I didn't talk to the person owning the Cadillac.
It is true,if you have an emissions related fault that stores a fault code in the PCM,we can retrieve "freeze frame data" (readings of sensors at time of fault)...This aids in diagnostics...In this list of data is the mph at the time of the fault
The SDM (sensing diagnostic module) can display mph at time of air bag deployment...and I assume could be used in a case of litigation.(you were doing 80mph when you hit that tree, not 45 ;) )
Evil-Twin,The box affixed to your seat is the seat control module... ;)
TY C5 Tech the other day while putting on my new driver seat cover,, and seat gear drive... I saw the black box.. I though that was what everyone was talking about... others have said it was under the seat.. I do not want to give out false or misleading info.. so thanks again I know you have the right info...
about 2 days ago there was a post regarding the black box (it's really silver), there was a link to pages and pages of info about it and when GM began putting it on vehicles (99')
I don't know why it can't be found now, i've gone back 2-3 weeks on both the tech and general discussions and also review my last 2 weeks of history. :(
I think the box is located in the center of the dash somewhere. I've been looking through the index of my service manuals and I can't find anything about it in there yet either.
from my scanning of the article it said that there were 3 main reasons they were using it for: 1. don't remeber, 2. crash investigation, & 3. ordinance violations.
I'm going to keep looking...I sense a black (silver) box conspiracy in the works.
I always wondered if GM told soon-to-be buyers of Corvettes that there was a black box recording their driving habits, how many individulas would buy a different vehicle???
