Make sure the white plug is all the way down in the top of the cluster. Check it, and check it again! It has got me a few times! It looks like it is in but one side won't be pushed all the way down, HUD will appear completely dead.
If the 11 pin cable between the HUD switch panel and back of cluster is not connected good you may get the same thing, the HUD will really be working but it the switch is unplugged it will be dimmed all the way to off so you can't see it.
My bet is on the top plug though, it is easy to not get seated.
yeah almost for sure bet that the top plug for the HUD hookup is what is the problem.... firmly but gently make sure it is completely seated. It can easily be bent, the pins that is, and you just need to make sure it is all in there the right way all the way. Plus when the gauge cluster is being re-installed the wire can get pulled out or dislodged easily.
I did check that top connector a couple times and even disconnected and reconnected to make sure...... Not sure what happened, but could I have damaged the HUD by disconnecting it?
On a side note.....will a z06 cluster work in a c5? Are they plug and play? I like the angled numbers in the z06 cluster.....

If you can get a voltmeter in there you can check the voltage on that top plug. Just probe the back side right beside the wire and it will make contact. With the plug plugged in you should get: The first pin/wire from the right is ground, the second from right should have 12VDC, the third from the right is (the best I remember) the dimmer control, it should read 5VDC on dim and 0VDC on bright. On the left side of the plug the first wire, third hole in connector (first two unused) should have 5VDC and should go to 0VDC when you press the down button, the second wire is the up control and should read 5VDC and go to 0VDC when you press the up button. The three left over is data and will read either 5VDC or 0VDC and may be changing.
I'm still betting on that top plug, I never get the right side down far enough. Check the voltage and let us know.
Also try the to move the HUD up and down and look down in through the windshield and see if the mirror moves or not.
Be sure the key is on for all the above test!
Z06 cluster should work fine. You shouldn't damage the HUD disconnecting it, unless you broke a wire in the plug. I would make sure the key is off first though. Even better unhook the battery.
