Horn pad...how to remove?
My horn is acting up again. Last time the dealer did some makeshift wire repair at the steering wheel. I need to get in there and look around. My question is, does the soft pad in the center of the steering wheel snap off? I have yanked on it, and it seems to want to come up, but I'm afraid to pull too hard. No fasteners are evident. I don't see anything in the manual for removal.
I just removed mine to install a VE Steering Wheel. Be very careful as you don't want the airbag going off in your face
You first need to pull the SDM fuse from the fuse box under the passenger kickboard (#16).
You then need to remove the center consol, insulation panel under the drivers dash and then the drivers kneeboard. Once you have done this there are two yellow plugs under the drivers side dash that need to be disconnected. Disconnect the one just above the brake pedal first and then the other closer to the front. After you do this the airbag will be completely diabled and safe to remove.
There are 2 star screws at the back side of the steering weel you now need to remove. After you remove these the pad should come off. The yellow airbag plug comes off by pulling straight up and there is a black ground wire that will pull off. The horn wire just simply come off w/ a slight twist.
A PITA but better safe than sorry..

Yikes! What a PITA! just to get to the freakin' horn wire! thanks for the info.
I can tell you for a fact that the dealer did not do all of these disconnects when he adjusted my horn pad on my 99. I was buying the car so I had them fix it before I'd take delivery. i'd say it took about 15 minutes start to finish for him to get it postioned correctly.

Sounds about right. Dealer "fixed" mine 2 years ago while I was having suspension work done....charged me $75 to fix the horn.
