Very little gain with an otherwise stock motor, especially if you don't have headers etc. Maybe 15-20 horses at best.
Porting of the heads makes the most power when they are matched with a good cam, but the other very important issue is exhaust.

Its a waste of time to feed more air to your motor and not be able to get it all out. More air in and more air out makes the power increases.
A good set of long tube headers and x pipe are virtually a necessity when doing the heads, or heads and cam.
All of this can break the bank so many people start with headers, an x pipe with high flow cats and a cat back exhaust system.
Material cost ~$2000

Then, when the budget permits, you can have a good head/cam package done.

With ported heads, a good cam and exhaust I gained ~140 horsepower at the wheels.
I also have the LS6 intake, tb, smaller pulley and a great tune that got me there.

Texas speed and Performance makes a great set... and wont' break the bank... I think they run right around $800 shipped with all hardware adn connecting pipes... It's been awhile since i bought mine... otherwise to go cheaper there is an Ebay brand that many members have installed with no real complaints... only $300 or something to that effect but you need to get your own hardware to mount it...
